The bottom of Bull Lane -junction with the Dorchester
Road. Surface water ponding after heavy rainfall.
1.2.2 Potentially dangerous road junctions.
The road junction in Station Road with Cattistock Road at
the bottom of Norden Lane.
The junction of Bull Lane with the Dorchester Road.
1.2.3 Road widths
There are a number of roads in the village the widths of which are
considered to be too narrow to cope with the volume of traffic that
they currently support. These are:
Bull Lane
Station Road
1.2.4 Pavements
The recent installation of the pavements along the Dorchester Road welcomed.
Accepted that there were problems with crossing the Dorchester Road but doubts as to the need for a pedestrian crossing.
Poor condition of the pavements in Church Road.
1.3 Car Parking
1.3.1 There are a number of designated car parks in the village:
Railway Station.
A number of people from the surrounding area travel to Maiden Newton by car, thence onward by Rail. These spaces need to be identified on the ground.
Village car park (beyond White Horse Mews) Often full to capacity.
Chalk and Cheese
Limited parking for clientele.
Pound Piece Residents
Pound Piece Practice Staff and Patients
Webbers Piece Public and Residents
1.3.2 Roadside Parking
The lack of residential garage space and off-road parking has given rise to roadside parking which is considered to be unsightly and, in some cases, hazardous to pedestrians and motorists alike:
Cattistock Road - adjacent to Webbers Piece and the Manor Farm housing development.
Cars parked along Dorchester Road have moved to the east following the construction of the 'pinch point' opposite Kingsley House. This has moved the previous congestion from this point further east towards the Garage.
The parking in Church Road of vehicles owned by those who work in the immediate vicinity creates problems when funerals or weddings take place.
Ineffective use of the open space behind White Horse Mews.
NB. There are no designated off-road car parking spaces that are currently identified for the use of diners in Le Petit Canard.
2. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
2.1 The following are suggested as being detrimental to the overall appearance of the village:
The unregulated use of the field to the east of the bottom of the Drift.
Servicing of motor cars in Combe Bottom.
Motor cycle track in Combe Bottom.
The condition of the buildings on the edge of the village on the river side of the Dorchester Road when approaching from the direction of Frampton.
The remains of the car in the field on the river side of the
Dorchester Road when approaching from the direction of Frampton.
The appearance of TLC Motors and associated engineering works.
The overall appearance of the Magna housing estate.
Condition of the open space behind White Horse Mews.
Minor building works utilising unsympathetic materials (replacement windows, doors, bargeboards etc.).
2.2 Village Design Statement
It is recognised that the compilation of this design policy document will identify the recommended built characteristics of the village, leading eventually to an improvement of the built environment
3. HOUSING
3.1 Concerns expressed relating to the number of new houses
proposed and the current widths of the roads that are expected to cope with the future traffic that these developments will generate.
3.2 The need for an element of affordable housing has already been identified. The aim now is to ensure that such housing is made available at 'affordable' rates, either through shared equity schemes or let at below market rates.
The Hedley Haward Memorial Playing Field
How should Maiden Newton Parish Council develop the Playing Field?
What games do you want to play?
Rugby
Cricket
Hard Court Needed?
Tennis
Basketball
Netball
5-a-side football
Can the pitch or court be fitted into the space available?
Do we need a Sports Hall?
If yes, what for?
What about the Youth and Community Centre? (11 years maximum of life left) Should it be replaced?
If so by what?
Footpaths Maiden Newton
Station to Pound Piece - outside village Hall and route to North Road - whole area needs drastic improvement for safety reasons. Plenty of width here, to allow work to be viable.
Dropped area of pavement on Dorchester Road to allow turning of agricultural vehicles into Frome lane while providing a wide enough pedestrian designated area
Bull Lane - remove wall and rebuild and/or move grass bank to allow continuous pedestrian access - outside BT premises
Bull Lane - look at entrance of lane onto Dorchester Road - dangerous crossing point
Provision of continuous pavement on Station Road outside Dairy Cottage plus drop kerbs on both sides of the road on the blind bend
Improvements on corner opposite The Stores
Restoration of footpath outside the Old School House on Church Road
Addition of bollards on Dorchester Road to protect people exiting doorways e.g. the bakery,
Extend pavement to encircle War Memorial to protect it from vehicles using it as a turning circle
Extension of pavement (perhaps cycle way) from bottom of Frome View to link with well-used bridleway and footpath at entrance to Maiden Newton (to Steve Marshes) - verge and space - a viable project
Improvement to footpath from Whitehorse Mews (fronting paper-shop) to River (Quackers). This would include pavement outside Chip Shop.
Footpaths Frome Vauchurch
Extend Pavement opposite Whitehall up Crewkeme Road along past Natalia Terrace to link with turning to Wynford Eagle and Greenford View and then onto Chilfrome Lane at entrance to Higher Fromevauchurch from Crewkerne
Extend pavement from School (on school side) to Youth Centre - plenty of space here, very viable project - ensure immediate safety of children using the Youth Centre
Sort out footpath/parking outside youth centre - temporary measure
