About The Event

Windrush Weekend Retreat

3-day residential retreat in Kent, in beautiful Ashburnham Place.

Dates: Friday 23 June to Sunday 25 June 2023

Categories: Story-telling, Inter-cultual dialogue, Vipassana, Forgiveness.

WINDRUSH WEEKEND RETREAT- Open to all

On this retreat we will bring compassion to our Windrush stories; connecting to nature; vipassana; and forgiveness. This will be a chance to tell stories; listen and hear them in a calm and healing environment with the intention to embrace and build intercultural dialogue and our shared humanity. We welcome anyone from any creed; culture or background to this multicultural event. With some gentle breathing; focus; resting and story writing; we can connect to our past; within the present moment; and bring healing to ourselves and future generations and help us release old wounds and narratives.

If you have got a story or you know of a story in your family and community, this will appeal to you. When we hold onto our stories in a negative way; it can be harmful. This weekend in particular will help those of the African diaspora and people of colour heal from the wounds and legacy of oppression; slavery and racism. With some gentle breath focus, resting and story writing, we can connect to our past, within the present moment and bring healing to ourselves and future generations.

Join us on this weekend to explore how to use these stories to heal, regenerate and educate.

Small-group breakout sessions:  Facilitated by experienced practitioners.

Noble Silence:

This program includes dedicated periods of both wise speech and noble silence. Some contemplative exercises may involve mindful speaking and listening.

Pre-requisites and support:

  • Having a base practice - a meditation practice that you are familiar with, that is available to you, and that you know can support an arising of wellbeing.
  • Some basic reading or understanding of Vipassana
  • Intention for intercultural dialogue

To sponsor someone who otherwise would not be able to attend, please purchase a tiket and let us know.  There are those who would like to benefit from this retreat and would benefit from it, but who cannot afford to do so.  We price our events on a non-profit basis and make them as affordable as we can, and we offer bursaries.  But we also rely on the generosity of others to enable us to enable those who cannot afford to do so, to attend.  So please, if you can, buy an extra ticket which we will allocate to someone who really needs it.

Retreat structure, supports and schedule, pre-orientation (zoom) event.

1. One-on-one guidance with teachers if needed. To discuss how to best support your practice, explore different levels of your experience in practice, and find what is happening for you and what may be blocking or challenging

2. Daily talk exploring aspects of practice in more depth

3. The hall will be held as a shared, silent practice space. We request you attend all events.

4. The teachers will offer practical means to support your practice

5. The practice schedule for this retreat will be published a month before the event

6. The event coordinator will be the main contact point.  There will also be a message board

7.  The teachers would like to encourage you to take some extra time for the practice before the retreat begins if possible, as it would be very beneficial if your practice already has some momentum from the beginning. We will support this within the structure.
